Ultrasounds

Pregnancy Education

As you anticipate the arrival of your little one, you’ll likely have a few ultrasounds to monitor their growth and development. While traditional 2D ultrasounds provide a flat, black-and-white image, you may have heard about 3D and 4D ultrasounds.

It’s important to know that both 3D and 4D ultrasounds use the same sound wave technology as a standard 2D ultrasound and are considered safe when performed by a trained professional.

The best time to get a 3D or 4D ultrasound is generally between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. If you are interested in an elective 3D or 4D ultrasound, reach out to our office.

What are 3D and 4D Ultrasounds?

The Purpose of 3D and 4D Ultrasounds

While not a standard part of prenatal care, 3D and 4D ultrasounds can be used for both medical and elective reasons.
Medical Purposes
In some cases, your provider may recommend a 3D or 4D ultrasound to get a better look at a specific area of concern that was identified on a 2D ultrasound.
Elective and Keepsake Purposes
Many expectant parents choose to have an elective 3D or 4D ultrasound for the bonding experience it provides. Seeing your baby’s face and movements can be a powerful and emotional moment for you and your family. It’s crucial to remember that these elective ultrasounds are not a substitute for medical care and should not be used for diagnostic purposes.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

An elective 3D or 4D ultrasound is typically a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
Preparation
To get the clearest images, it’s often recommended to be well-hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.
The Procedure
The process is very similar to a standard ultrasound. You’ll lie back while a sonographer applies a gel to your abdomen and moves a transducer over your belly to capture the images.
Duration
A typical session can last from 15 to 45 minutes.
Keepsakes
You’ll receive printed photos.
